Raised Spiral Stitch Ribbing Pattern for Any Project
Plump raised spirals on the front and a basket-weave look on the back. Grow 2 stitches into 4, twist them back, and repeat every 6 rows.
Another easy, beautiful raised design. From the side you'll see little spirals standing up off the fabric, and the back looks like basket weave. It looks even better in real life than on camera.
Stitch count
Multiples of 5, plus 3. My swatch is 38 stitches; I teach it on 13.
What you'll need
- Any wool, acrylic or merino
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 6-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1 and knit every stitch.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 and purl every stitch.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 2, purl 1.* Repeat. End with purl 1, knit 1.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 2, knit 1.* Work the stitches as they appear. End with knit 1, purl 1.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2. Yarn back. Knit the second knit stitch without dropping it, bring the yarn forward (yarn over), and knit it again: 3 stitches from 1. Then knit the first knit stitch and drop them all. The 2 knit stitches have become 4. Purl 1.* Repeat. End with purl 1, knit 1.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 2, bring the yarn forward, purl 1, then twist the 3 stitches made from one and purl them together into 1. Take the yarn back, knit 1.* Repeat. End with knit 1, purl 1.
Repeat these 6 rows: a knit row and a purl row, two rib rows, then the grow-and-twist rows.
