Spiral Rib Knitting Pattern: Wavy Vertical Ribs for Men's Sweaters
Vertical ribs that twist and wave like a spiral. It looks different from every angle, and it's lovely on men's sweaters and borders.
This is another easy and beautiful design. Turn it in the light and it looks different from every angle, with ribs that seem to spiral up the fabric. It looks tricky, but it's just a twist and a stitch slipped for a few rows.
Stitch count
Multiples of 4, plus 2. My swatch is 42 stitches; I teach it on 10.
What you'll need
- Any wool. A smooth wool or merino gives crisp ribs
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 6-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 1, knit 2, purl 1.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, purl 2, knit 1.* Repeat. Purl the last stitch.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 1. Take the yarn back and knit the second knit stitch without dropping it. Bring the yarn forward and slip the first knit stitch purlwise, dropping both off the needle together. Purl 1.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, slip the next stitch with the yarn at the back (the one you slipped before), bring the yarn forward, purl 1, take the yarn back, knit 1.* Repeat. Purl the last stitch.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 1, yarn back, knit 1, yarn forward, slip the same stitch again, purl 1.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, bring the yarn forward and slip the same stitch again (this time with the yarn in front), purl 1, take the yarn back, knit 1.* Repeat. Purl the last stitch.
Repeat these 6 rows. Rows 7 and 8 are rows 1 and 2 again, where the long slipped stitch is finally knitted and the twist starts again.

It's especially handsome on men's sweaters, and it also makes a lovely border on any project.
