Simplest Reversible Basket Weave Knitting Pattern
Only knit and purl, four rows, and both sides look beautiful, so you choose which one goes on the front. My simplest basket weave.
This basket weave is one of the easiest designs I know, and it looks lovely from both sides, so put whichever side you like on the front. It's all knit and purl: no yarn overs, no cable needle, nothing tricky.
Stitch count
Multiples of 3, plus 1.
What you'll need
- Any wool: acrylic, wool, merino or cotton
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 4-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip the first stitch, take the yarn back, and knit every stitch.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip the first stitch (it's the wrong side), take the yarn back. *Knit 2, purl 1.* Repeat to the last 3 stitches. Knit 2, then purl the edge stitch.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip the first stitch. *Purl 2, knit 1.* Repeat to the last 3 stitches. Purl 2, then knit the edge stitch.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip the first stitch and purl every stitch.
Repeat rows 1–4. The little raised blocks build up into a woven basket texture.
Where to use it
Because it's reversible, it's ideal for scarves, mufflers and blankets where both sides show. It's also lovely for cushion covers, bags and children's sweaters.
