Rose Bud Embossed Knitting Stitch: Raised Knots Like Strung Pearls
Little raised knots like rose buds, or pearls on a string. They look much more prominent in real life than on camera, and the pattern is only 4 rows.
This rose bud pattern looks like strands of pearls strung together, and the knots stand right up off the fabric. They look much more raised in real life than they do in the video. It looks different from every angle, and the back has its own neat texture.
Stitch count
Multiples of 4, plus 3. My swatch is 35 stitches; I teach it on 15. It pulls in slightly but stretches back out, and it takes about 10% more wool than plain knitting. A border is optional.
What you'll need
- Any wool. A plump wool or merino makes rounder knots
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
Foundation (2 rows, not repeated)
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Knit 1. *Purl 1, knit 3.* Repeat. End with purl 1, knit 1.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, purl 3.* Repeat. End with knit 1, purl 1.
The 4-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 1, knit 3.* Repeat. End with purl 1, knit 1.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, purl 1, purl 1 wrapping the yarn twice, purl 1.* Repeat. End with knit 1, purl 1.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 1. Take the yarn back. Slip the next 2 stitches (letting the extra wrap drop) and put them back on the left needle. Pull a loop through from behind those 2 stitches, bring the yarn forward, and pull a second loop from behind them. Knit the 2 stitches together with the third knit stitch through the back loop, then pass the two loops over, working them together through the back loop, to close the knot.* Repeat. End with purl 1, knit 1.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, purl 3.* Repeat. End with knit 1, purl 1.
Repeat these 4 rows. On row 3, three stitches become four and then go back to three, and that's what pushes each knot up.
Want the buds further apart? Knit 4 plain rows between repeats and work the knot rows after them.
