Very Easy Embossed Knitting Pattern with V & A Loops
Long loops pulled up from a few rows below sit over a little rib panel, first in a V shape and then in an A shape. It looks unusual, but it's only a 4-row repeat.
This one looks unusual and a bit difficult, but it's very easy and comes out beautifully raised. Long loops, pulled up from three rows below, frame a small 5-stitch rib panel. On one pattern row they meet in a V, and on the next they spread into an A, so the texture ripples up the fabric.
Stitch count
Multiples of 8, plus 5. My swatch is 45 stitches; I teach it on 21.
What you'll need
- Any wool. A smooth, plump wool shows the loops best
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
Pulling a loop
Count down three rows below the stitch named in the instructions, insert the needle into that third space, and pull a loop through. Keep it loose. It should reach comfortably up to the needle. Leave it on the right needle; it's worked off on a later row.
Foundation (rows 1–6, not repeated)
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1, purl 3. *Knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, purl 3.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 purlwise, knit 3. *Purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, knit 3.* Repeat. Purl the last stitch.
- Rows 3–4:
Repeat rows 1 and 2.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1, purl 3. *Yarn back. Pull a loop from 3 rows below the centre purl stitch of the panel. Knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, then pull a second loop from the same point (a V). Yarn forward, purl 3.* Repeat. Knit 1.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1, knit 3. *Yarn forward, slip the loop, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, slip the next loop, knit 3.* Repeat. Purl 1. Every wrong-side row from now on is worked like this: stitches as they appear, loops slipped.
The 4-row pattern (rows 7–10)

Slip 1, purl 3. *Knit the first loop together with the next stitch through the back loop, knit 1. Pull a new loop from 3 rows below the purl stitch just outside the panel on this side. Purl 1. Pull a loop from 3 rows below the purl stitch on the other side. Knit 1, then knit the next stitch together with the old loop through the front loop. Purl 3.* Repeat. Knit 1.

Slip 1, knit 3. *Purl 2, slip the loop, knit 1, slip the loop, purl 2, knit 3.* Repeat. Purl 1.

Knit 1, knit the next stitch together with its loop through the front loop, purl 1, knit the next stitch together with its loop through the back loop, knit 1, then pull another loop from the same centre point. Purl 3.* Repeat. Knit 1.

Slip 1, knit 3. *Slip the loop, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, slip the loop, knit 3.* Repeat. Purl 1.
Repeat rows 7–10. The loops alternate between a V meeting at the centre and an A spreading out to the purl gaps, and the panel between them puffs up.
