Two-Colour Diamond Lattice (Honeycomb) Knitting Pattern No. 901
Call it diamond, lattice or honeycomb. Pairs of stitches cross over each other in two colours, so it looks like one fabric peeking through another. Double-thick and very warm.
This is a beautiful and quite different design. You can call it a diamond pattern, a lattice pattern or a honeycomb pattern. Knitted up, it looks as if you're wearing a fabric of one colour underneath a knitted net of another. Keep one colour throughout or change colours as you go for a multicoloured look. Because the yarn is carried double, it comes out thick and warm.
Stitch count
Multiples of 8, plus 2. I teach it on 18. This pattern pulls in a lot, so after your border increase by about 60%. On my swatch I went from 34 stitches at the border to about 50.
What you'll need
- Two colours of wool: colour A (the lattice) and colour B (the background)
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
Set-up (rows 1–2, knitted once)
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Knit 2 in A, knit 4 in B, knit 2 in A.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch in A.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 and purl every stitch in its own colour.
The 8-row repeat (rows 3–10)
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Cross the 2 A stitches to the left over the 2 B stitches (B behind, A in front), then purl the 2 B in B and knit the 2 A in A. Cross the next 2 A stitches to the right (B behind), then knit the A pair in A and purl the B pair in B.* Repeat. Knit 1.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Purl every stitch in its own colour.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2 in B, knit 4 in A, purl 2 in B.* Repeat. Knit 1. No crossing on this row.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Purl every stitch in its own colour.
- Row 7 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Cross the A pairs back outwards: the first A pair to the right (knit it, then purl the B pair behind it), and the second A pair to the left (purl the B pair, then knit the A pair).* Repeat. Knit 1.
- Row 8 (WS):wrong side
Purl every stitch in its own colour.
- Row 9 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Knit 2 in A, purl 4 in B, knit 2 in A.* Repeat. Knit 1. No crossing.
- Row 10 (WS):wrong side
Purl every stitch in its own colour.
Repeat rows 3–10. The A pairs meet in the middle, part again, and meet the pairs from the next repeat, drawing diamonds across the fabric. I purl the B stitches on the right side so the lattice stands out more, but you can knit them if you like.
Where to use it
Purses, cushions, sweaters and children's projects. Even the first 6 rows on their own make a lovely band along an edge. I love this one so much that I'm going to make a child's cap with it.
