The Raised Check Knitting Pattern I Spotted on TV
I was watching a web series when a sweater caught my eye. This is that pattern, worked out on my needles: small raised checks in plain knit and purl.
I noticed this design on a sweater while watching a web series on TV. It looked so lovely once made up that I took a photo of the screen and worked out the pattern to share with you. The photo is at the end of the video.
It's a basket-style pattern of small raised checks, and the back comes out raised and pretty too. On a whole sweater it looks even more textured than on my little sample.
Stitch count
This one is different: multiples of 8, minus 1. Usually we add a stitch, but here we take one away. I teach it on 23 stitches; the swatch is on 39.
What you'll need
- Any wool. Smooth, plain yarn shows the checks best
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
Rows 1–4
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 5, knit 3.* Repeat, ending with purl 5, knit 1 (edge).
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. Work the stitches as they appear: *knit 5, purl 3.* Repeat, ending with knit 5, purl 1.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Repeat row 1.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 purlwise and purl every stitch.
Rows 5–8 (the checks shift)
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1, purl 1. *Knit 3, purl 5.* Repeat, ending with knit 3, purl 1, knit 1. The single purl at each end keeps it symmetrical.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1, knit 1. *Purl 3, knit 5.* Repeat, ending with purl 3, knit 1, purl 1.
- Row 7 (RS):right side
Repeat row 5.
- Row 8 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 and purl every stitch.
Repeat these 8 rows: four rows one way, four rows the other way. The small checks pop up as you go.
Where to use it
Sweaters for men, women and children, cardigans, and mufflers. It's all knit and purl, so it's a good project if you've just learnt the basics and want something that looks special.
