Lace & Cluster Knitting Pattern for Women's Wear
Eyelets open into a little diamond, then five long loops gather it closed into a cluster. It looks different from every angle, and the back shows tiny hearts.
This is a very easy and supremely beautiful design, especially for women's wear. It looks different from every angle. The back is lovely too, like little hearts inside the lace, so you could use it either way round.
Stitch count
Multiples of 9, plus 4. My swatch is 49 stitches; I teach it on 22.
What you'll need
- A smooth wool, merino or cotton
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
Foundation (2 rows, not repeated)
- RS:
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 7.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- WS:
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 7.* Repeat. End with knit 2, purl 1. Every wrong-side row in the pattern is worked like this, except row 8.
The 10-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 2, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 3.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, slip-slip-knit, knit 1.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 3, yarn over, slip-slip-knit.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 7 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 4. Now pull up 5 loose loops, one through each eyelet you made in rows 1, 3 and 5, and leave them on the right needle. Knit 3.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 8 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 3, slip the 5 loops without working them, purl 4 (a little firmly).* Repeat. End with knit 2, purl 1.
- Row 9 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 3, slip the next stitch. Knit the 5 loops together through the back loop, knit into that stitch once more, then pass the slipped stitch over. Knit 3.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Rows 2, 4, 6 and 10 (WS)
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 7.* Repeat. End with knit 2, purl 1.
Repeat these 10 rows (don't repeat the foundation rows). The eyelets form a small diamond, and the loops pulled through them gather it closed into a cluster.
You can also knit just a band of this as a border and continue plain above it. Place it on your project however you like.
