Leaf Lace Knitting Pattern No. 901: Easy 10-Stitch Leaves for Any Project
Lacy leaves outlined with eyelets. It looks hard, but every wrong-side row is simply purled, and the right-side rows are one 10-stitch repeat.
This is a very easy leaf design, number 901 in my series. Each leaf is 10 stitches, outlined by little eyelets, and the leaves stack up neatly in columns. It looks difficult, but every wrong-side row is simply purled.
Stitch count
Multiples of 10, plus 1, such as 21, 31, 41 or 51. My swatch is 41 stitches; I teach it on 21.
What you'll need
- Any smooth yarn: wool, merino, cotton or acrylic
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 12-row pattern
- Rows 1, 3 and 5 (RS)
Slip 1. *Slip-slip-knit (2 together through the back loop), knit 2, yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 1.* Repeat.
- All wrong-side rows (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12)
Purl every stitch.
- Row 7 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Yarn over, slip-slip-knit, knit 5, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 1.* Repeat.
- Row 9 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, yarn over, slip-slip-knit, knit 3, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2.* Repeat.
- Row 11 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Knit 2, yarn over, slip-slip-knit, knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 3.* Repeat.
Repeat these 12 rows. In rows 1–5 the eyelets sit either side of the centre stitch, opening the leaf out. In rows 7–11 they move one stitch inwards each time, while the knit stitches in the middle go from 5 to 3 to 1, closing the leaf into a point.
Where to use it
It's lovely on children's projects. Use it as a wide border with a solid pattern or plain knitting above it, or knit it all over a cardigan, frock or stole.
