Easiest Embossed Knitting Stitch Pattern for Beginners
If you know knit and purl, you can make this. Wrap two stitches twice, turn them into a little raised knot on the next row, and the whole fabric looks embossed.
This design is easy and beautiful. It comes out quite embossed and works up quickly. If you've just learnt to knit and only know plain and purl, you can still make it. The back looks like a normal rib.
I used Ganga Olivia wool, which is slightly thick. That's why my sample looks extra raised.
Stitch count
Multiples of 4, plus 4 for the edges (so 4 + 4 + 4…, however many you need). Because it's a knit and purl pattern, it pulls in a little, so take a few extra stitches.
What you'll need
- Any wool. Thicker wool makes it more raised
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 4-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 2.* Repeat. When 3 stitches remain: purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. Work the stitches as they appear, like a 2x2 rib: knit over knit, purl over purl.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, take the yarn back, then knit the next 2 stitches, wrapping the yarn twice around the needle for each one.* Repeat. When 3 remain: purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 2. With the yarn at the back, slip the two wrapped stitches off (letting the extra wraps go) and put them back on the left needle. Insert the needle behind both of them and pull out a loop; that's one stitch. Then knit the same two together through the back loop; that's the second stitch.* Repeat. When 3 remain: knit 2, purl 1.
Repeat these 4 rows. Row 5 is simply row 1 again: purl 2, knit 2.
Where to use it
Children's sweaters and cardigans, borders, and anything knitted in thicker yarn, like purses, bags and cushions, where it looks even more raised and lovely.
