Most Requested Delicate Knitting Pattern for Baby Layettes, Mufflers & Ponchos
Once it's knitted, nobody can tell how it's made. Three purl stitches wrapped with the yarn, alternating every other row, for a fine, delicate texture.
This is one of my most requested designs: a very easy, fine (baarik) pattern that nobody can work out once it's made. Groups of three purl stitches are wrapped with the yarn, and the groups swap places every other row, so the fabric gets a soft, raised little texture.
Stitch count
Multiples of 6, plus 5. Or think of it as multiples of 6, minus 1.
What you'll need
- A fine baby wool, soft merino or cotton. I used two colours
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The wrap
With the yarn in front, purl 3. Keeping the yarn in front, slip those 3 stitches back onto the left needle. Take the yarn to the back, then slip the 3 stitches back to the right needle. The yarn now wraps around the three purl stitches.
The 4-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1, knit 3. *Purl 3 and wrap them, knit 3.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 and purl every stitch.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. Purl 3 and wrap them. *Knit 3, then purl 3 and wrap them.* Repeat. Knit the last stitch. The stitches that were knitted before are now purled and wrapped, and the other way round.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 and purl every stitch.
Repeat these 4 rows. I changed colour every 4 rows, which looks lovely, but it's just as pretty in one colour.
Where to use it
It's perfect for baby things: a layette set, caps and hats, booties and shoes. It also works for cardigans, mufflers and ponchos for any age.
