Easy Knit Purl Basket Stitch: A Raised 2-Stitch Design in 4 Rows
Four rows, only knit and purl, and the fabric comes out looking puffed and woven. If you can knit and purl, you can make this today.
This design is very easy and comes out looking beautifully puffed. If you know how to knit and purl, you can make it without any trouble. The back has a neat pattern of its own too.
Stitch count
Multiples of 4, plus 2. I made my sample on 10 stitches.
What you'll need
- Any wool: acrylic, wool or merino
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 4-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip the first stitch, bring the yarn to the front, and purl every stitch up to the last one. Knit the last stitch. Yes, it's the right side, but we purl it.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip the first stitch, take the yarn to the back, and knit every stitch. Together, rows 1 and 2 make reverse stockinette.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Knit 1, purl 2, knit 1.* Repeat across. Knit the last stitch.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Purl 1, knit 2, purl 1.* Work the stitches as they appear, purl over purl and knit over knit, to the end.
Repeat these 4 rows. As the rows build up, the purl ridges puff up between the little knit columns, and the fabric takes on a raised, basket-like look.
