Bamboo Stitch Knitting Pattern: 2 Stitches, 2 Rows, Beautifully Raised
A thick, raised stitch that looks like rows of little bamboo canes. Two stitches, two rows, and it looks lovely on the back too.
Bamboo stitch is one of the prettiest easy stitches I know. Once it's knitted it has a raised look, like little canes lying side by side, and the back is raised and interesting too. It comes out quite thick, so it makes a sturdy, cosy fabric.
Stitch count
Any even number of stitches. Cast on in pairs.
What you'll need
- Any wool or yarn. A smooth wool or merino shows the raised texture well
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip the first stitch. *Wrap the yarn over the needle (yarn over, wrapped the way shown in the video, not forward), knit 1, purl 1, then take the yarn to the back and pass the yarn over over both stitches you just worked.* Repeat across. Knit the last (edge) stitch.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip the first stitch and purl every stitch to the end.
Repeat these two rows. Row 3 is the same as row 1, always worked on the same two stitches, and the pattern builds itself.
Where to use it
Use it as a border or all over a project. Because it's thick, it's lovely for cushions, pillow covers, purses and bags. For children's coats and jackets it makes a warm, sturdy fabric.
