Very Easy Basket Weave Knitting Pattern No. 902 for Men's & Kids' Sweaters
Blocks of knit and purl framed by slipped stitches, swapping places every 4 rows. Raised and handsome on the front, with neat little checks on the back.
This design is very easy and looks very handsome once it's made. It's a raised pattern, and you can even use the back as the front, because it makes small, neat checks.
Stitch count
Multiples of 8, plus 3. I teach it on 19 stitches.
What you'll need
- Any wool. A plain colour shows the texture best
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 8-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Slip 1, knit 3, slip 1, bring the yarn forward, purl 3, take the yarn back.* Repeat. Slip 1, knit 1.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. Purl the slipped stitches, knit the stitches you purled, and purl the stitches you knitted: *purl 1, knit 3, purl 5.* Repeat, and purl the last 2.
- Rows 3–4:
Repeat rows 1–2. The same slipped stitches are slipped on every right-side row.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Slip 1, bring the yarn forward, purl 3, take the yarn back, slip 1, knit 3.* Repeat. Slip 1, knit 1. The knit and purl blocks have swapped places.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Purl 5, knit 3.* Repeat, with the slipped stitches purled as before, and purl the last 2.
- Rows 7–8:
Repeat rows 5–6.
Repeat these 8 rows. The single slipped stitches frame each block like the weave of a basket.
