Very Easy Knitting Stitch Pattern for All Projects
One little move, knitting 3 stitches together twice with a yarn over between, makes neat puffed clusters. Four rows, and it suits nearly anything.
This design works on almost anything: men's sweaters, ladies' cardigans, children's projects, cushions, even purses. It's all built on one little move that turns three stitches into three puffed stitches. The back has a neat look of its own.

Multiples of 9, plus 4. My swatch is 40 stitches; I teach it on 22.
What you'll need
- Any wool, merino or acrylic
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
The 3-into-3 move
Knit the next 3 stitches together, but don't drop them, and keep the new loop loose. Bring the yarn forward (yarn over), then knit the same 3 stitches together once more and drop them. You've made 3 stitches out of 3.
Foundation (2 rows, not repeated)
- RS:
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 7.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- WS:
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 7.* Repeat. End with knit 2, purl 1.
The 4-row pattern
- Row 1 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, knit 2, 3-into-3 on the middle 3 stitches, knit 2.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 2 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 7* (purl each of the 3 cluster stitches separately). Repeat. End with knit 2, purl 1.
- Row 3 (RS):right side
Slip 1. *Purl 2, 3-into-3, knit 1, 3-into-3.* Repeat. End with purl 2, knit 1.
- Row 4 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1. *Knit 2, purl 7.* Repeat. End with knit 2, purl 1.
Repeat these 4 rows. There's one cluster in the middle on row 1 and two clusters either side of a centre stitch on row 3, so the texture alternates.
