Knitted Flower Lace Band: An Easy Eyelet Tape for Edges, Hairbands & Stoles
Just 12 stitches wide: a pretty lace tape of eyelet flowers. Sew it on as an edge, wear it as a hairband, or join strips into a stole or muffler.
This is an easy lace band pattern, a little different from the usual, and you can use it on almost any project. Make bands and hairbands from it. Join several strips together to make a stole, shawl or muffler. Or use it as an edge border on palazzo pants or a cardigan: pick up stitches along the top of the band and carry on knitting any pattern you like above it.
What you'll need
- Any yarn. Cotton or a fine wool shows the lace beautifully
- Knitting needles to suit your yarn
Cast on and edge
Cast on 12 stitches with any method. Knit 2–4 rows plain (garter stitch) to start the edge. The 2 stitches at each side are edge stitches and are always knitted, so the band has neat garter edges. The 8 in the middle are the pattern.
The flower eyelet
Knit 2 together, wrap the yarn twice around the needle (a double yarn over), slip 1, knit 1, and pass the slipped stitch over. On the next (wrong-side) row, knit into the double yarn over once and purl into it once, which gives back the 2 stitches you decreased.
The 14-row pattern
- Rows 1 and 3 (RS)
Slip 1, knit to the end.
- Rows 2 and 4 (WS)
Slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, purl 8, knit 2.
- Row 5 (RS):right side
Slip 1, knit 1, knit 2, make one flower eyelet, knit 2, knit 2.
- Row 6 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, purl 3, knit and purl into the double yarn over, purl 3, knit 2.
- Row 7 (RS):right side
Slip 1, knit 1, then two flower eyelets side by side, then knit 2.
- Row 8 (WS):wrong side
Slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, purl 1, knit and purl into the double yarn over, purl 2, knit and purl into the next double yarn over, purl 1, knit 2.
- Rows 9–10:
Repeat rows 5–6 (one eyelet).
- Rows 11–12:
Repeat rows 7–8 (two eyelets).
- Rows 13–14:
Repeat rows 5–6 (one eyelet).
The eyelets go 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 and form a little flower. Then start again from row 1: the 4 plain rows make a gap before the next flower.
You can also use this pattern all over a baby project. It looks very sweet.
