Knit a Stuffed 5-Point Star for Cushions, Christmas Trees & Pillows
A quick, easy knitted star: five triangles shaped with centre decreases, two pieces sewn together and stuffed. Make it small for the Christmas tree or big for a cushion.
These knitted stars are very easy and quick to make. Hang small ones on a Christmas tree, scatter them on a shelf, or knit a big one for a cushion or pillow. Each star is two flat pieces sewn together and stuffed.
What you'll need
- 4-ply acrylic wool
- Size 10 needles: one straight needle to cast on, and a circular needle
- A stitch marker
- Polyfill, cotton, or little bits of leftover yarn for stuffing
- A sewing needle
The maths (so you can change the size)
A star has 5 triangles, so the stitches are divided into 5 sections. I cast on 125, which gives 25 per section: 12 stitches, a centre stitch, and 12 more. To make it bigger or smaller, change the count in multiples of 10, keeping the extra 5 (for example 105, 115, 135).
Step 1: Cast on and join

With a single strand, cast on 125 stitches, plus 1 extra for joining (126).

Knit 125 stitches onto the circular needle and slip the last one without knitting.
- Join
Fold the needle so half the stitches are on each side, without twisting them. Pass the extra slipped stitch over the first stitch to join the ring. Place a marker at the start of the round.
Step 2: Shape the five points
- Round 1:
*Knit 11, work 3 stitches together (slip 2, knit 1, pass the slipped stitches over, as for a V-neck centre), knit 11.* Repeat 5 times.
- Round 2:
*Knit 10, 3 together, knit 10.* Repeat 5 times.
- Every round
One stitch fewer on each side of the centre decrease: knit 9, then 8, and so on. The centre stitch always stays in the middle of its section.

When 15 stitches are left, work 3 together five times, leaving 5 stitches.
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and thread it on a sewing needle. Slip all 5 stitches onto the tail, just as when finishing a cap, and pull tight. Stitch through two or three times to secure it, then fasten off on the inside. Knit a second piece the same way.
Step 3: Sew and stuff
- Place the two stars together with wrong sides facing, matching the cast-on points.
- From the right side, sew them together, picking up one stitch from each piece at a time. That way the seam line is invisible.
- Sew around four of the points, leaving a small opening.
- Stuff each point evenly with polyfill, cotton or leftover yarn, and press it into shape.
- Sew the opening closed and hide the end inside the star.
Try them in different colours, and in a big size they make lovely cushions.
