Easy Basket Weave Knitting Pattern (Beginner-Friendly Reversible Design)
· 4 min read · Tutorial · By Chinki
Only knit and purl — that's all you need for this basket weave pattern. Four rows, fully reversible, and beautiful on both sides. The perfect beginner stitch pattern.
This basket weave knitting pattern is one of those rare designs that's genuinely beginner-friendly and genuinely attractive. It uses only knit and purl stitches — no yarn overs, no decreases, no cable needle. And because both sides look beautiful, you can use whichever you prefer as the front.
Stitch Count
Cast on stitches in multiples of 3, plus 1 extra stitch. For example: 31 stitches (30 + 1).
The 4-Row Pattern
Row 1 (Right Side)
Slip the first stitch, keep the yarn at the back, and knit all stitches across the row.
Row 2 (Wrong Side)
Slip the first stitch, keep the yarn at the back. Then work the repeat: knit 2, purl 1 across the row. At the end, knit the remaining stitches as they appear and purl the edge stitch.
Row 3 (Right Side)
Slip the first stitch. Then work the repeat: purl 2, knit 1 across the row.
Row 4 (Wrong Side)
Slip the first stitch and purl all stitches across the row.
Repeat these 4 rows continuously to build the basket weave texture.
Why This Pattern Works So Well
- Fully reversible — both sides are attractive
- Only uses knit and purl — no special techniques
- The 4-row repeat memorises quickly
- Creates a textured fabric with natural stretch
- The woven look adds visual interest without complexity
Project Ideas
This pattern is versatile enough for scarves, dishcloths, blankets, bags, and cushion covers. You can also embellish the spaces in the pattern with beads or simple embroidery for extra detail.
